Fernwood

44 acres in the western foothills of the Oregon Cascades

A long driveway leads from the end of the paved road

This building contains an
enclosed paddock for the horse
And an open, covered day are

A tack room, hay storage area
lights and water and hot water
tank for the wash rack

It also contains complete
processing room for the holly
including refrigerated storage

A 44 X 64 pole barn
keeps all the equipment
protected from the rain

There are two other barns
for work shop and storage

The house is surrounded
by nine giant oak trees
which provide a lot of cool shade in the summer

Geo-Thermal Heat Pump

In a 400 foot trench we buried six pipes five feet underground
where the temperature is a constant 55 degrees. A compressor
in the house creates heat in one coil and cold in the other.

A furnace fan blows air past the coil to either heat or cool the house
depending on the season. The water circulates underground going
out at 33 degrees or 100+ degrees and coming in at a constant 55 degrees.

It burns no fuel, just one compressor, one water pump, and one fan.
We also have a wood burning fireplace insert to supplement the heat
in the winter and have 20 acres of forest to supply the firewood.

20 years ago I built a 9 hole golf course at Fernwood.
